Interview on Regis and Kelly

Regis: Well, at ten years old, she made her film debut as Harry Potter’s fellow wizard-in-training in the blockbuster hit, Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. The lovely young Emma Watson.

[Emma comes out]

R: Emma! You look great! I’m Regis and she’s Kelly, and welcome to our show. Jump up there and let’s talk. [They all seated] This is Emma’s first trip to New York. The first time in America. What are your thoughts Emma?

Emma: I love it. It’s amazing.

R: A little lively for ya?

E: [chuckles] It’s kinda like London intensified.

R: Sure. That’s a very good answer. Where do you live in England?

E: I live in Oxfordshire.

R: What’s that like? It sounds pastoral. You know, with cattle grazing.

E: It’s not like that. It’s got lots of colleges. It has Oxford, a major college. And it’s like loads of schools. It’s quite big, but it’s not as busy as London.

R: And you go to school in your neighborhood?

E: Yep.

R: Good. And you have a litter brother?

E: I do.

R: What’s he like?

E: He’s nice. [laughs]

R: Do you get along with him?

E: Yes.

R: No fighting.

Kelly: Is he an actor as well?

E: No, but he’s really really interested in acting. He’s very interested.

K: Especially with your newfound stardom.

R: Sure, sure. He wants to be you. And what do your parents do?

E: My parents are both lawyers.

R: Both lawyers. Good. Now is this the very first time you’ve acted? And how did the movie came to you?

E: Basically my school got the audition. Basically.

R: No kidding.

E: Yeah. Which is really surprising. It’s really strange ways to get into it, like having an agent and stuff like that, but I didn’t. It was done in the school gym.

R: And what was the audition like?

E: It was exactly like a drama lesson, really. It didn’t feel like they were auditioning. It was like the 16 of us together and not focused on me or anyone else.

R: Yeah. Were you a fan of the Harry Potter books before they came?

E: Yeah. I was in the middle of the third one before I started auditioning. I’m a major Harry Potter fan.

K: Did you feel you sounded like the character? Did you embody yourself as the character? Did you picture yourself as the character when you were reading the book?

E: Now that I made the film. When I read the book, I see myself as Hermione but before I never… It wasn’t even in my wildest dreams.

R: What happened when you learned you got the part? It must’ve been the thrill of your life.

E: I couldn’t believe it.

R: What did the other kids say at your school? “Why you?! Why you, Emma Watson?!”

E: [laughs] “Because I’m worth it.”

[audience laughs and applauds]

K: [to Regis] I guess she told you! [laughs]

R: Yeah. This is a major movie. A first time on the movie set. What was it like? Did you have fun making the movie? Or was it a lot of work?

E: It’s not as glamorous as everyone sees.

R: Yes, absolutely.

E: It’s very different. There’s so many people involved. Everything’s so big.

R: Did you remember all your lines? Or did you muffle them once in a while?

E: Everyone muffles once in a while. But, I mean, they did it in these small chunks so you don’t have to remember that much.

K: She did a very good job in the film. My son has quite a crush. His first crush.

R: Really? [to Emma] You’d love him. He’s about three years old.

E: Aww… That’s cute.

R: You can’t beat a younger man, you know. [audience and Emma laughs] Let’s take a break. We’ll come back.

[commercials]

R: Emma Watson you see in the new Harry Potter movie, which is a tremendous sensation. It’s gonna make a big impact on your life. You wanna continue your acting career right?

E: MmHmm.

K: How did it change you? Will you leave school? What’s your big plan for yourself at eleven?

E: [laughs] I think I want to carry on school. I’m definitely not gonna drop out. I’m gonna get into college.

R: Good. And you are gonna become a lawyer.

E: [pretends to think thoughtfully] No..

R: I’m kidding.

E: Shuffling around paper on a desk is not really my thing.

[audience laughs]

K: She’s my kind of girl.

R: Go to school. Get that college education and see where it takes you.

E: Exactly.

R: Sure. Absolutely. You know, whenever we have a guest from England I get really excited. And all of a sudden my own British accent seeps out. [in a different voice] “Hello, Emma! How are you?”

E: [laughs]

R: [same voice] Don’t I sound like Cary Grant?

E: No.

R: Do you know who Cary Grant is?

E: [laughs] No.

R: [normal voice] No, I didn’t think so. There you go. [laughs] In this particular scene – Incidentally, someone told me you have a crush on Prince William. [pauses] No? [Emma pretends to be thinking deeply] Little bit of a crush? He’s so –

E: A little bit.

R: He’s so… What a stud puppy he is.

K: I bet he would have a crush on Emma after seeing the movie.

R: Yeah. There you go. Sure, Emma.

K: She’s a superstar!

R: Yeah. He’s a dude, but you’re a beauty.

E: He’s just a dude. Brad Pitt’s a dude. But, maybe. [audience laughs]

R: Brad Pitt’s a dude. Yeah, you’re right. Well, now that you’re so observant about men… [fixes suit and clears throat] Check it out. Check it out, Emma! Take a good long look. And tell me where do I stand. [pauses]

[Emma laughs suddenly and uncontrollably]

[audience laughs]

R: Guess she told me. Let’s go to the clip, Gelman. Here it is. Here’s Emma playing Hermione levitating a feather. Yeah, she can do that. Take a look. [shows a clip of the “it’s ‘levi-O-sa’, not ‘levio-SAA’” scene]

[audience applauds]

R: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. Yeah. One of the big hit of the season. Emma, thanks very much for stopping by. Nice to have you here.

E: Thank you.
