STAR
GIRL: Gwen Stefani - 'I work hard to look this good'
Did you set out to be a style icon? When people started saying stuff about
how I dressed in the early days, I was dismissive of it because if you're
in a band, it's uncool to talk about what you're wearing - it's about the
music. But I've always loved clothes - fashion is an extension of my personality.
It isn't important in life, but it's fun.
Where do you find your outfits?
I've always made my own clothes. I'd buy clothes from secondhand shops, then alter everything. My bedroom was always the room you didn't go into unless you wanted to get pins stuck in your foot.
Why have you called your fashion line LAMB?
I used to call my dog Lamb. Her real name was Marilyn, after Marilyn Monroe because she had blonde hair, but in the last few years of her life she followed me everywhere, like Mary's little lamb. So then I started calling anything cute 'lamb'. And this way, my dog's memory will live on.
Is it exciting to see other people wearing your clothes?
It's so exciting, but it's also weird. I'd see a girl across the street with her bag, but it was my bag, you know? It's a bit of a jealous feeling, but at the same time it's magical that people like them. People say, 'That skirt is cute' and I go, 'I know, because I made it for me.'
What's your greatest extravagance when it comes to splashing out? When I'm in London I splurge on Vivienne Westwood's clothes. I love them, and they fit me really well.
What's happening to No Doubt now you're doing a solo album?
We're taking a break, but we're not breaking up. We've been together 17 years. I wanted to make an 80s dance record with fake drumbeats, like Salt 'N Pepa, and I couldn't do that with No Doubt. I haven't finished my album yet, but I hope it will be out before the end of the summer.
Do you find comparisons of you to Marilyn Monroe and Jean Harlow annoying or flattering?
It's crazy, but it's not annoying. It's amazing to be playing Jean Harlow, the original blonde bombshell, in my first film, The Aviator. Growing up in LA, I was fascinated with starlets. My room was covered with Marilyn Monroe posters and I loved early Hollywood. It's such a glamorous era.
And what about Madonna?
I was at school when Madonna's first records came out, and to admit liking a pop idol such as Madonna was not something I did. It was not until later that I started to appreciate what an incredibly talented person she is, and has continued to be over the years. I suppose we do have a lot in common.
Do you and Gavin hang out with Madonna and Guy in London?
Yeah, we've had dinner together, she's great. I like it in London - I get lots of attention and better tables in restaurants. Madonna says she prefers her life in London because she feels more free. I know what she means. I get to have a break and have family time with Gavin.
You spend a lot of time in London - do you think you'll develop an English accent?
No. If I ever sound English, slap me.
How do you keep your fab figure?
I have to work very hard to look as good as I do. I work out every day, I go hiking and I have a personal trainer.
Are you on a permanent diet?
I go through phases with food, like everyone else. If something cool is coming up and I want to look good, I get into my healthy fitness mode and take care of myself, then as soon as its over, it's like, 'Hooray, let's go get pizza.' I do whatever I want, I become a lazy slob and watch TV.
How do you find time in your hectic life to be with Gavin?
Well, he's obviously the most important part of my life and I make sure he's my number one priority. Sometimes I say no to things because I want to be home with him on Sunday and hang out. Relationships are hard work, but so far it's been really fun work. Gavin's so talented - and he's an amazing cook. I love to eat, he loves to cook, so I really scored. We have a great time together - I just love being married.
Are you planning to have children soon?
I hope so, sometime in the future, yeah. I do think about babies and kids all the time and we really want them, but at the moment we're enjoying our marriage and being together without babies. My life has turned out nothing like I thought it would, but it's all in the big plan and all meant to be.
