Born and raised in Nepean, Ontario, Sandra Oh began taking ballet lessons at the age of four. She became heavily involved in theater at school, playing the lead role in her first school play when she was ten.
At 16, Sandra began acting professionally in plays and commercials and by the time she was 18, she had a regular role in the Ottawa-based television series "Denim Blues".
After high school, Oh auditioned for and was accepted into Canada’s prestigious National Theatre School, located in Montreal. Immediately upon graduation in 1993, she won the title role in the CBC-TV movie, The Diary of Evelyn Lau, about a teenage runaway, and has never been out of work since. Career highlights include winning a Genie Award as Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for her feature film debut in Double Happiness (1994), followed by another Genie Award four years later for the film Last Night (1998).
When she landed the breakout role of Rita Wu in the HBO comedy series Arli$$ in 1996, Oh moved to Los Angeles. She stayed with the series for six years, winning a Cable Ace Award in 1997. She continued to appear in feature films such as Guinevere (1999), Dancing at the Blue Iguana (2000), The Princess Diaries (2001), and Under the Tuscan Sun (2003).
In the independent film Dancing at the Blue Iguana, much of the film was improvised by the actors, and Oh, who proved to be a sexy breakout star. Her adept acting at improvisation made her the sexy star of the film. She really poured her soul into the stripper role and she seductively stole the film. She won a Best Performance award at the Milan Film Festival for her starring role as a stripper/poet. She then won a Theatre World Award for her role in Stop Kiss at the Joseph Papp Public Theatre in New York. Still ever hottier was her guest appearance as a porn starett in "Six Feet Under" 2001 the same year. Hot off her roles in As was busy on Big Fat Liar (2002), and Full Frontal (2002).
In 2003 she met and quickly married director/writer Alexander Payne. He would later direct her in an award-winning film set in the california wine country Sideways. She plays a wine savvy sexy single mom Stephanie who falls in love with the wrong guy.
In 2005, unfortunately the marriage had pretty much broke up coincidentally after filming of Sideways. Her work schedule prolly didn't help as she was very busy with many roles in Mulan II (voice) Ting Ting, Hard Candy as Judy Tokuda, Break a Leg as Young Turk , Cake, as Lulu and the indy film 3 Needles all in 2004 and late 2006.
Since the breakup of her brief 3 year love affair/marriage, recently. She returns to ABC-TV's medical series Grey's Anatomy, the show has been as instant hit and in 2006 she won a Golden Globe for her work on the show as the lovely Dr. Yang.
FACTS
Was a member of a National Champion Canadian Improv Team at The Canadian Improv Games in the late nineties.
When asked who her favorite rock-star is, she answered Wayne Coyne (lead singer of The Flaming Lips), the reason being he looks enough like her husband, Alexander Payne, for her to pretend her fantasy about being married to a rock-star is true!
Attended Sir Robert Borden High School in Nepean, Ontario.
She has played a pregnant woman in two films: in Under the Tuscan Sun (2003) with Diane Lane, and in Cake (2005/I) with Heather Graham.
At the 2005 SAG awards, Sandra Oh presented the Actor for actress in a TV comedy - Teri Hatcher won the award. A year later at the 2006 Golden Globes, Hatcher presented the award for best supporting actress on TV - Oh won that award and later said it was good to see her again!
In Under the Tuscan Sun (2003), her girlfriend was portrayed by Kate Walsh, who went on to costar with her in "Grey's Anatomy" (2005). Coincidentally, Kate also played a doctor in the film.
She has the distinction of playing two characters that co-exist in Armistead Maupin's fictional universe. In "Further Tales of the City" (2001) (mini), she portrayed a bitchy newswoman who complicated "DeDe Day"'s mission to protect her twins, Anna and Edgar. In The Night Listener (2006), Oh portrays an adult "Anna Day".
QUOTES

"You just don't care about what people think. But it's hard to do because people tell you what they think all the time. It's sort of nuts. We actors, we're a fragile bunch, and yet we need to be strong because 90% of our lives is rejection. You have to figure out what really is important."
"And on a Canadian set, everybody is equal. You get paid the same. You live together in barracks. You have a communal kitchen. You buy and cook your own food."

Won 2006 Golden Globe TV Award. "Grey's Anatomy"
